Requests

Things to ask me for.

Reach out to me via email at for any of the following.

Invitations for conferences, workshops, talks, seminars, panel discussions, …

I am always very happy to give a talk on any of my projects, host a workshop related to my work, or participate in a panel discussion about my career, projects, or any other statistics or data science topic relevant to my interests. Please feel free to reach out!

Involvement with student organizations, outreach events, …

If it works with my schedule, I am happy to participate in outreach events, collaborate with student organizations, and be involved with other student initiatives. Please email me!

Supervision for research projects

As a Teaching Stream faculty, I do not supervise reading courses, independent study projects, or other student research projects at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Please reach out to other faculty members for this.

Reference Letters

I only provide reference letters (for graduate programs, internships, research opportunities, scholarships, employment, etc.) to students I know well. This includes:

  • Students whom I have worked with personally (as my TA or RA, on committees, in student organizations, etc.)
  • Current and former students from my courses who have met all of the following criteria:
    • I have instructed you for at least one full semester (12 weeks of class)
    • You were active in class discussions (i.e., during lectures) and attended office hours on a regular basis
    • I recognize you by both name and face

Please email me at least one month in advance of your earliest deadline for all reference letter requests, and I will let you know if I am able to serve as your reference, as well as the information I will require if so.

Please note that I instruct over 1000 students every year, and as such, decline the majority of my reference letter requests I receive, as it is very difficult for me to speak in detail about any specific student. The more specific a reference letter is, the stronger it is, and I want to make sure that I am writing letters that add to your applications!
